Chapter Twenty-Two It's a Place I Sometimes Go to It’s a place I sometimes go to on a Sunday evening. I don’t tell the others. It’s none of their business. I slip out of the house and across the park and I’m back after a couple of hours. It’s the kind of place you can go to and are welcomed with no questions asked. People recognise you and they are friendly, they pat your back, shake your hand, they take the pound coin that I always pop on to the golden collection plate at half-time with a grateful smile. They gaze admiringly at my Edwardian finery. That’s what someone at the Spiritualist Church once called my clothes. Edwardian finery. Until then I’d never realised what I wore was that old-fashioned. Inside it is warm. Sprays of irises and lilies bedecking the altar. When one of the nice old couples who come here have an anniversary, they often donate a bouquet for the front of the church that Sunday. It’s a little tradition they have. I feel buoyed up by the atmosphere here, and it gives me a small measure of faith in something. I’m not sure what. Something beyond the usual tread of the life we are used to. Something bigger. I seem to need that sense of the divine, or whatever. I like it when they get a medium on, spreading messages and tittle-tattle from the hereafter. And there’s always the chance, I suppose, that one day I’ll get a message that’s just for me. That one of my deceased loved ones will one Sunday consent to grace me with their presence. Whoever they are. And I suppose that’s what I come here for too, to this small, whitewashed, warm and rather ramshackle church beside the park. I’m a bit surprised it’s still on tonight. One Sunday before Christmas, the worst winter on record. Three deaths locally - put down to desperate wild creatures come in from the countryside. Three deaths! And the town is almost cut off from the outside world by snow. Still the church manages to bring a medium in from outside, and there she is, in a hot pink tracksuit, waiting patiently in the pulpit as they conduct the more orthodox part of the church service and everyone nods their habitual hellos to each other. 109
